I have an ’84 BMW 528i and I am having a couple of problems with it.
Hopefully someone can help.
I am experiencing a steering wobble between 50 and 60 mph as if my
wheels were not balanced. I have had the balancing done, new tyres on
the front and alignment checked (there was no adjustment necessary).
Having done all of this, I guessed there was excessive play in the
front suspension parts somewhere. I got the car into the garage and
they checked everything and found no problems anywhere in that
department. They also checked my brake discs (rotors?) and found them
to be fine also. They suggested that it could possibly be worn shock
absorber struts (the car has done 90k miles, 23k in the last 14
months). Could shocks be the problem? Sounds plausible that there
could be a shimmy there as the problem is exaggerated on bumpy roads.
The second problem I think is ABS related. Often when the car is first
started (not always from cold) I get a grating sound from the front
end when I brake. Also the pedal fights until pumped. It only happens
the first two or three times I brake and then all is well. I know when
it is going to happen because I hear a slight whirring noise coming
from the front of the car (like an electric motor). In the couple of
times I have had to brake in a hurry recently the wheels have locked
up so I guess that ABS is not working. I have never had a car with ABS
before that works so I don’t know how it should feel on braking.
If anyone has any ideas, please post or email
Thanks
Andre
