I’ll be graduating from college this year, and I naturally want to get
out of the 1976 Chevy Nova that I’ve been driving and into something
*quite* a bit better. My eye has really been turned by the 1994
Celicas. I’m looking into getting the ST hatchback.
Could anybody out there who has one or thought about getting one and
turned it down let me know why/why not? I’d also be interested in
hearing what cars were chosen by people who decided not to get the
Celica (no more than $20000, though).
Thanks!

<< your letter about the Celica deleted >>
I have been looking for a post-college car and I am having a tough time
narrowing my choices down. One of my picks is the Toyota Celica. Since I
have an 80 Tercel, I know that it is a good, long-lasting car and Toyotas
*should* still be as durable. (I have heard that the Japanese, though, are
beginning to make junkier cars so that they can get more money during
repairs). Anyway, I have had bad experiences both times I have gone to a
Toyota dealer (different cities).
The thing that I like about the Celicas is that they are sporty yet they
also come in a hatchback model. The problems I have seen, though, is that
the base model is only 110 hp and the GT is ONLY 145 or so!! I think that
those figures are a little low for what the car *should* do. As an
unmarried male under 25 living in California, the insurance rate for the
Celica GT is $2200 a year!!!!!! And this is for a 4 cylinder with only 145
hp??????? Yuch!!
When I went to test drive, the salesman drove the stick version "out of the
lot" like we were at the local speedway. I was NOT impressed by this (I’m
looking for a *little* practicallity in my car). I wanted to drive an
automatic, but they didn’t have any. The second dealer "only had two
salespeople that day — on a Sunday — and couldn’t leave the lot". I
thought that that was crap!
The ride seemed okay but I don’t remember if the Celica was one of the cars
where you sat very low in the seat.
Anyway, I hope this helps, but let me know what other info. you come up
with.
By the way, do you have info on: Saturn SC2, Honda Civic LX or EX, Ford
Mustang, or Ford Escort GT??
thanks for any help.

I am currently driving a 1990 Celica GTS, I had also driven a 1994 CELICA
GTS, just for driving, there aren;tany difference, except the position of
the stick and the hand brake is different, more comfortable..
but I think it doesn;t worth to buy a car with 135hp for that money…
It just way too slow after you drive that for a while..
as the engine is the same as the old model…
but for reliability… its pretty good… there weren’t any problem with
that since I bought mine…
well.. it really deopends on your budget…
for me … I probably will pick the Ford Probe instead..

Just saw a review on the new Celica on one of the car shows and they like the
car alot but it had 2 major drawbacks. 1) Underpowered 2) overpriced. They said
for the price you could do a lot better with some of it’s competition. If you
like the styling, don’t mind the power (or lack thereof) and have the bucks go
for it.

Hey, any information I can get is extremely helpful. I just want you
to know that your dealer problems seem to be an exception — I’ve been
to three Toyota dealers, and they have all been *extremely* nice to
me. Only reason I haven’t driven one yet is that I haven’t had time.
By the way, do you have info on: Saturn SC2, Honda Civic LX or EX, Ford
Mustang, or Ford Escort GT??
I know that one of my friends has an older Mustang, and it takes a lot
of cajoling to get me into that death trap (and as far as I can tell,
it hasn’t changed a whole lot since then). It’s a nice car as long as
it’s a nice day. As soon as bad weather shows up, the car is
completely unpredictable.
Saturn SC2 is another of the cars that I’m looking at, but all I’ve
had the chance to do so far is go to the library and look up the
prices. Seeing that the nearest Saturn dealer is 30-45 minutes away
from my home (not at school — I don’t know where any are down here),
I don’t have much of a chance to get out. However, I’d be interested
in any information you find
thanks for any help.
and thanks for yours!

OK — to keep everybody up to date on my findings, I’ll let everyone
know a little (not really a) secret.
The Integra is a MUCH better car for the money! (SURPRISE!)
I test drove both of the cars yesterday (Celica ST and Integra LS),
and the Integra has more power and better handling. All this for a
*much* lower price (I negotiated down to $17329, but decided not to
buy this week — I need more money for the down payment, and
graduation is next weekend). According to my research, this is about
$200 less than the Celica ST *invoice* price for the same options, and
about $3000 less than the sticker price (of course, I negotiated about
$800 off the sticker for the Integra). In any case, if anybody is
looking at the Celica, I would like to add my urging to test drive the
Integra and see if you still want the (wimpy power for more money)
Celica!
Keeping the world informed,

Keep negotiating! I bought an Integra LS hatchback last weekend through a
buying service, and they got one of my local dealers down to $16300, which was
$1800 below invoice (this was for the car plus mudguards, pinstripes, and
floormats).
Good luck!

Ooops! I *meant* to say $1800 under *MSRP*, not invoice! It was $500 *above*
invoice.
