From what I’ve seen around here…and my own opinions…
Neon (most controversial but also most power, good mileage, spacious,
    handles well)
Civic (spacious, good power in EX, great mileage in DX or VX)
Corolla/Geo something (if it’s that cheap)
Saturn SL1 (for the dealer service)
Tercel/Paseo, for reliability and gas mileage

    Steve
look at: Sentra, Protege, Neon  - you can get some good bargains
Of course it’s the end of the 94 season, and all cars are going to start
getting dumped off the lots soon.  Never know what kind of gems you might
    find.

Maybe we should have a rec.autos.misc FAQ!

I just bought a Saturn SL2 (124hp)…The base Sx2 models are in that range
(’95 pricing: SL2:11995, SC2:12995, SW2:12695).  While that limit does not
allow for option packages, you could get a fairly upgraded Sx1 (100hp) for
    that price (’95 pricing: SL1:10995, SC1:11895, SW1:11695)

Saturn’s service is the best–bar none.  The dealers (as a _general_ rule)
are great, and the cars are overall really quality product.  For the money,
it’s hard to get a better car.

If you are willing to spend lots of your free time and many weeks/months
searching, I think the best car for $12,000 is a high-end used car.  You
have to be willing (and able) to take the time;  you’ll also need to find a
mechanic that you trust–or have the tools and knowledge yourself.

With used cars, you can’t just visit a dealer and get a sales
brochure–you’ll have to find out about the cars yourself.  The net is a
great place to get both basic and technical information from owners.

The biggest problem I have seen with new and used car buyers is the
"impulse buying" syndrome.  The problem is particulary bad when it comes to
used cars:  with new and used cars you can pay too much or get a car not
suited to your needs or budget, but with used cars you can also get stuck
with a lemmon if you act impulsively.

The reason why your post caught my eye was that your price point, $12,000,
was what I paid for my Mercedes Benz 300E.  As for search time, I spent 6
months waiting for a 5-speed.  As for non-impulse buying, I walked out on
    the dealer 3 times and negotiated in person and on the phone for 3 weeks;
    this saved me $3000.

That’s an interesting question.  I doubt that the Cavalier is all that bad
    of a car.  I don’t know.

I guess it’s kind of like the Escort.  My opinions on these two cars are
highly colored by the early 80′s models which were just plain absolute crap.

They might be better today, but I wish they had used a different name for
    them then. :)

Well supposedly the Cavalier is getting a completely new redesign for 1995.
Have to wait and see I guess if it’s any good.

    >2. Have fun! Drive them all!

There’s an idea.  Make sure you test drive at least one car a day for the
next two months.  By then you’ll have it figured out which one you really
    like. :)

Only a moron would not buy the Honda Civic Coupe.  It’s within the 12,000
    dollar price range.

There is no better vehicle for $12,000.

Honda Civics (and Accords) take a licking but keep on ticking.  Best of
all is that they are American vehicles (at least 50% US content).  Now,
the trick is to find a non-obnoxious dealer.

That’s the hard part.  Deciding on the car is easy.

Between Corolla/Prism, Civic, Protege, Sentra, Neon, Saturn, Mirage/Colt
the differences are essentially a matter of choice. In terms of reliability
the differences are marginal; the same applies to quality of build.

Unless you want some acceleration.  Then there are better vehicles.  102
hp just doesn’t cut it!  There are also roomier cars in that price range.

Nope.  The law is 75% content to be considered domestic (American).  No
    Honda is classified as domestic.

And only a moron would say that Honda is a US vehicle.  The profits
    go to Japan.  Nuff said.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Hondas are reliable cars.  I would
personally never buy one, but I am not against them.

Just laughing at Dwight’s rhetoric once again.

OBDwightJoeLine:  We should not buy any product from Japan because the
number of United States vehicles that they purchase is miniscule
compared to the number of Japanese vehicles sold in the states.
AND they ban the sale of Korean cars in Japan.  Every single
shipment of Japanese cars to the US should be sent back to Japan,
    via armed escort if necessary.

No flames please.  Just being sarcastic.
